Citing Delhi power troubles, Orissa CM seeks special status [The Indian Express]

Citing the instance of how Delhi is struggling to restore power after the May 30 storm, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday justified Orissa’s demand for special category status saying the state needed a lot of resources to face recurrent natural calamities.

“You may recall, recently on May 30 a storm hit NCR. Fifteen days have passed and they still have a serious power emergency and it is understood that it may take another 15 days before normalcy is restored… Our state has faced the maximum natural calamities and disasters and every time a natural disaster hits, it consumes lot of resources. This is one of the main reasons why Orissa should be given special category status,” he said on Monday at the end of a discussion on the motion of thanks on Governor S C Jamir’s address.
Naveen said his government does not believe in confrontation. “We believe in cooperation. Our approach will be positive and constructive towards the Centre and we hope the Union government will address the just needs of the people of our state…”
